This is will be a short read - hooooray!
Many of us have heard the quote "90% of success is just showing up" and while this may hold true for some, it isn’t always the case. This is why I think “advice” is contextual - what applies to Mrs A might not necessarily work for Mrs B per time.
Back to the matter.
If 90% of success is hinged on just showing up, what about the other 10%? The other 10% of success largely depends on what you're showing up for.
Growing up in Lagos (arguable the most populous city in Africa), I used to see thousands of people head out into the rat race every morning. Many will do this for the rest of their lives without making anything tangible. Wake up by 4am, spend hours in traffic, work, spend a few extra hours in traffic, eat, sleep, rinse and repeat.
Would you say these people aren’t / weren’t showing up?
So ask yourself again - what are you showing up for?
Showing up is important but there’s more to it than that - doing work that matters. I'm certainly not saying that you shouldn’t be responsible and do what you need to do to survive and provide for your loved ones. I’m saying that you should immerse yourself in whatever gives you the best ROI.
Showing up is very important in the grand scheme of things. But if you're doing this without results it's time to ask yourself the hard question - Is this for me? Am I doing this right? Am I cut out for this?
If you're working hard and not being recognized it's a good idea to look at what you're working hard on.
Show up, yes, but for things where the potential for rewards/achievements correlates with your willingness to put good effort into it.
