How do you introduce yourself?
Time to check-in
This question became very important to me when I met with a couple of people/friends for dinner and we had one rule - do not mention anything related to your career/work.
More often than not, we tied our lives and identities to our work. I’m not saying this is a bad thing but when you’re not working who are you, what are your values, and what keeps you going?
I see people give up pieces of themselves so that they can reach their dreams but lose every other thing that makes them feel 'human'.
I don’t think it is wrong to derive your self-worth from your professional achievements. You worked hard for it! You landed that job, got that promotion, worked late hours, sacrificed your time, started that company etc. However, success comes in many forms, and your achievements outside the office/work matter too.
Additionally, we tend to lose sight of our values when the stress of work and life sets in and eventually forget why we do what we do or what drove us in the beginning. Ask yourself, has your attachment to work or business pulled you away from your core values? Has it made you lose sight of what you deemed important in the beginning?
Your work/business should add meaning to your life, but it should not be the meaning of your life.
Ashley Immanuel in my interview with her on The Grinders Table gave one of the best introductions of herself that I’ve heard. Catch the conversation here - Apple, Spotify, Google
