How are you making your customer's life better?
Chronicles of an Afropreneur

Dear ,
I had the opportunity of speaking to this year's cohort of the Forbes Digital Accelerator (the Nigerian edition) a few days ago and I asked a simple question - "How is your product or service helping your customers live better lives?"
As entrepreneurs, we often make the mistake of overthinking what value is, we think that value must be as huge as landing a person on the moon. However, this is not the case. Value is whatever makes your customers live seamless lives. Customers do not care about your product, they care about what it helps them do.
This brings us to the concept of "Jobs to be done". This concept explains that Customers 'hire' an array of various solutions at various times to get a wide array of jobs done.
For example, Mr Ayo needs a weekend getaway to relieve stress. He can decide to 'hire' an airliner to take him to the Bahamas. He can also decide to visit his favourite hotel in his location or go chill in his best friend's house. Different solutions for the same need.
For the Airline company, Mr Ayo wanted to get from point X to Y faster. However, if they look deeper, they would see that speed may not have been at the top of Mr Ayo's mind. He just wants to relieve stress! So building or offering additional features to solve that need will
What additional feature can the airline offer to Mr Ayo:
- Hotel/resort/tour recommendations and discounts in-flight
- Airport pickup
- Discount at bars and clubs
- Discount spar sessions
Mr Ayo will definitely remember this Airliner because they solved his need, and made him a more efficient traveller by helping him get the best out of his trip.
So you see, if we can just drill down to what the customer segment really needs, you will always be top-of-mind.
I closed my presentation with this quote from Kathy Sierra - Upgrade your user, not just your product. Don't just build better cameras, build better photographers.
